HRBT Expansion Project’s New TBM is Delivered to VDOT

According to the announcement of the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), which is currently active on the long-awaited HRBT expansion, it is preparing to receive the tunnel boring machine for the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel (HRBT) Expansion Project.

Receiving the TBM Mary will cause a new landmark in this project. Jim Utterback, project director for the Expansion said: “Team members are continuing to prepare the South Island of the HRBT for receipt of the TBM.” In accordance with Utterback’s statement further information is due to be published sometime this month, while there is no determined date as the exact time of receiving the TBM.

Meantime, more than 350 piles have been installed to implement the foundation for the new marine bridges. Moreover, sound wall removal on the southside section of Interstate 64 (I-64) in Norfolk has commenced and girders are started to be removed to destroy the Mallory Street Bridge in Hampton. Due to both of these activities, passengers may be encounter slow rolls, stoppages, and new traffic patterns along the highway.
