Completing 10.5 km of the Base Tunnel in Turin/Lyon

Turin Base Tunnel

The tunneling process of the first 10.5 km of the Turin-Lyon base tunnel has been completed on 28 April 2022 at Saint-Martin-la-Porte, in Val Maurienne, France. You can see the related video here.

At almost 11:00 a.m., workers broke through the final rock wall reaching the 9 km section dug by the Federica TBM with the 1.5 km section built using the traditional method in one of the most sensitive parts of the mountain among France and Italy due to the presence of a long coal fault.

After building of the entrance portal at Saint-Julien-Montdenis, which was completed in the autumn of 2021, this is the second construction site of the project to be completed on time and on budget, while at the same time the work started on the French section of the tunnel through which the trains will pass. Currently, over 1,000 people are working on the 10 construction sites in the two countries.
