In order to provide two dual carriageways for airport vehicles under runway 16/34, the planning application for constructing a twin-cell tunnel has been submitted by Dublin Airport Authority.
Including an enclosed section almost 0.7km long and an overall alignment of about 1.1km from entry to exit, the tunnel’s approximate width will be 24m in external and approximately 5.5m in internal height from road to tunnel ceiling. The underground section will be up to 17.5m below the existing ground level.
Before spoiling of air travel by the Covid pandemic in 2019, the Dublin Airport Authority initially proposed this tunnel.
