As a main tunnel of almost 3.5km, construction of New Tunnel28 will be done under the contract that Hindustan Construction Company (HCC) has concluded with around Rs9.01bn ($100.5m) value for work on the Tupul–Imphal new Broad Gauge (BG) railway line in Manipur, India.
The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has issued this mandate to the HCC–VCCL Joint Venture (HCC–VCCL JV), in which HCC has a 65% share.
With the aim of strengthening connectivity in Manipur and neighbouring regions, the Tupul–Imphal BG corridor is a key rail link.
The scope extends to designing and proof-checking a Broad Gauge ballast-less track, followed by the supply, installation, testing and commissioning of the associated railway systems and structures.
Design, supply, erection and commissioning of tunnel ventilation facilities, together with complete electro‑mechanical installations, are also the contents of this work, whereas building of approach roads and other supporting works required to tie the tunnel into the wider infrastructure are also part of the agreement.
This assignment is one element within the broader programme to extend and upgrade India’s railway system.
Delivering numerous infrastructure schemes, including more than 402km of complex tunneling works,HCC has close to a century of engineering experience.
