Stockholm Tunnels Project – Implenia exceeds CO2 reduction target

Considering that a 10% reduction in emissions on the Lunda and Johannelund road tunnels project, that is part of the new Stockholm bypass, was required by the state transport authority Trafikverket but Implenia made significantly greater savings and  has cut CO2 emissions by over than a third on two tunnel projects in Stockholm.

According to Therese Rönnkvist Mickelson, country head sustainability Implenia Sweden: ““On completion of the construction work Implenia had achieved a reduction of 38% on the Lunda Tunnel project and as much as 47% on the Johannelund Tunnel. This corresponds to savings of approximately 10,000 tonnes and 40,000 tonnes of CO₂ respectively.”

With the aim of co-operation between client, project team and sustainability co-ordinator, firm structures were established for both construction sites from the project’s outset. Due to that the same people were largely in charge of both projects, synergies could be exploited, experiences shared, and measures co-ordinated efficiently.

Including construction methods and choice of materials to individual processes, climate targets were incorporated into all decisions from the planning phase.

Additionally, an action plan centred on emissions reduction on the construction sites.

“Among other things, we increased the proportion of recycled material, used lower-emission fuels and optimised concrete and steel structures,” said on-site sustainability co-ordinator Mary Lesmes.
