Victoria’s Suburban Rail Loop – Starting construction with TBM launch site

Concentrating on a tunnel boring machine (TBM) launch site in Clarinda, the Victorian Government of Australia has commenced construction on its Suburban Rail Loop (SRL).

As the place that tunneling is due to start next year, the Clarinda site’s construction is advancing rapidly.

With the aim of digging the southern section of the SRL East tunnels, TBMs will begin arriving later this year.

As part of the project, implementing the construction of 16km of twin tunnels between Cheltenham and Glen Waverley will be up to Consortium Suburban Connect, whereas Terra Verde is going to handle the tunnels north of Glen Waverley to Box Hill.

Commissioning four TBMs from Clarinda, two machines are digging towards Glen Waverley and two towards Cheltenham.

In order to allowing tunneling to start while the machine is still being assembled from a smaller launch area, these TBMs are slated to utilise flying launches.

With a weekl advancement of 90m, each TBM will take about three months to assemble, as the state government said.

While the excavation for a second SRL East TBM launch site is progressing in Burwood, determined date for commencing the tunneling process from this site is next year.

According to the government, the construction of SRL East from Cheltenham to Box Hill is to create up to 8,000 direct jobs, with more than 3,000 individuals already engaged in the project.

SRL East trains are projected to commence operations in 2035.

In February last year, construction started at all six station sites for the SRL East project.
