Eglinton Crosstown West Extension – Commencing final tunneling process

Ground was broken on the final tunnel segment of the Eglinton Crosstown West Extension by Ontario government.

Wth a daily advance of 1-2m, the 500m-long twin tunnels on the line’s eastern section will be built using the sequential excavation method.

Stretching just east of Jane Street to Mount Dennis Station, the extension will link to the future Eglinton Crosstown LRT service.

With the aim of making travel faster and more convenient, while bringing more than 37,500 people within a 10-minute walk of transit facilities, Toronto’s 9km Eglinton Crosstown West Extension is due to connect seven new stations to the Eglinton Crosstown LRT after completion.

According to Minister of transportation Prabmeet Sarkaria: “The government had a plan to tackle gridlock and shorten commutes for drivers and public transit users in the Greater Toronto area.As President Trump’s tariffs continue to threaten Ontario workers and our economy, it has never been more important to invest in transportation infrastructure. We will do whatever it takes to protect Ontario jobs and build for the future.”

The process of digging the twin 6.3km tunnels on the western segment of the Eglington Crosstown West Extension, was done by TBMs Rexy and Renny in June 2024.

The date of completing tunneling on the western underground portion of the Eglinton Crosstown West Extension from Renforth Drive to Scarlett Road was previous June, whereas the LRT is going to transition to a 1.5-kilometre elevated guideway, currently under construction.

Including the Ontario Line, the Scarborough Subway Extension, the Eglinton Crosstown West Extension and the Yonge North Subway Extension, during the next decade Ontario is investing nearly C$70bn (€45bn) in public transit, which includes the largest subway expansion in Canadian history.
