Thames Cable Tunnel Project – Awarding Planning Permission

The full planning approval to replace the existing Thames Cable Tunnel in Kent has been received by National Grid.

With the aim of strengthening the UK’s energy network, the Grain to Tilbury project is part of the company’s Great Grid Upgrade.

The current tunnel and cables, which originally installed in the 1960s, have reached the end of their operational life.

Construction of a new 2.3km tunnel beneath the River Thames, installation of new cabling, and new headhouses at each end for access, are the contents of this project. Also in order to connecting the new underground cable to the wider electricity network, Cable sealing end compounds will be installed.

The responsibility of commencing the construction is Ferrovial in partnership with Bemo (Ferrovial Bemo JV) and is expected to be completed in 2029.

According to Grain to Tilbury project director Mark Farmer: “We are delighted our planning applications for the Grain to Tilbury project have been approved, and this marks a significant step forward in upgrading electricity infrastructure in the region. We look forward to progressing with the next stages of the project and continuing to work closely with local communities and stakeholders.”
