Scheldt Tunnel Project – Preparing elements to sail

While construction of the eight elements for Antwerp’s Scheldt Tunnel  was commenced in January 2023 by Contractor TM Cotu began in a large construction dock in Zeebrugge, they currently have completed the process.

In order to being towed to Antwerp via the North Sea next year, over the next few months the elements are due to be made watertight, whereas four tug boats will accompany the towing boat.

The total quantity of used concrete for this project is 200,000m³ and 50,000 tons of steel were used for the tunnel elements. Each element weighs around 60,000 tons and consists of two tubes for vehicle traffic, a service lane and a 6m-wide bike lane.

The scheduled date for inauguration of the 1.8km-long Scheldt Tunnel is 2028 and it is a part of the Oosterweel Link, a ring road around Antwerp designed improve links to the city and its port.
