Reusing dirt and rock as we build the North East Link tunnels

The amount of dug dirt and rock, which are natural material that can be re-used, by TBM that involved in the construction of the 6.5km North East Link road tunnels will be almost 5 million tonnes of very deep underground.

Through an enclosed conveyor system that crosses high above Greensborough Road to a fully enclosed shed at Winsor Reserve, the excavated dirt and rock is moved, whereas inside the shed, the dirt will be safely loaded onto trucks, which are covered, sealed, and have their wheels hosed before leaving site.

Involving 11,500 soil and rock samples from over 2,700 locations across the entire it alignment including samples at tunnel depth, this project has carried out the most comprehensive program of site investigations ever on a major Victorian project, that clears the types of dirt and rock to be excavated for the project team and what we can do with it.

Additionally other sites, or other transport projects and new housing estates, have already used over than 1.5 million t of dirt excavated by North East Link.

In order to reusing a significant amount of dirt from the North East Link tunnels to rehabilitate a former quarry at Point Wilson and the former Orica site in Deer Park, tunneling is set to start soon, a contract has been concluded to Lantrak.
