Announcing preferred bidder for Australia’s T2D project

In order to advancing Australia’s Torrens to Darlington (T2D) project, a consortium of John Holland, Bouygues Construction, Arcadis Australia, Jacobs and Ventia has been selected as the preferred alliance partner.

As the final 10.5km section of the North-South Corridor, the T2D project is due to complete 78km of non-stop, traffic light-free motorway between Gawler and Old Noarlunga.

While twin three-lane tunnels, lowered and ground-level motorways, as well as overpasses and underpasses and upgrades at key intersections are the contents of this project, more than half of the project will be tunnels.

Considering that procure of three TBMs, instead of the two previously anticipated, is plan of the consortium, it means that both north and south tunnels can be constructed concurrently.

In the case of using additional TBM, construction will speed up the project so the project could be completed earlier than the stated 2031 deadline.

With intention of improving and lowering motorway sections with faster construction times and reduced costs; improving tunnel design and shorter cut and cover tunnel sections to decrease energy use and costs, and minimising impacts to local communities; and innovation for the construction of tunnel cross passages, and other systems elements of the tunnels, the consortium has also proposed plans for innovative tunnel portal arrangements.

The schduled date for commencing main construction works on what is the biggest infrastructure project in South Australia’s history, is 2025, whereasTBM works for the southern tunnels planned to begin in the second half of 2026.
