Winner of BART Silicon Valley Phase II work is Bechtel

The contract for construction management services for the BART Silicon Valley extension has been granted to Bechtel Corporation by Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA), whereas it is a10-year contract and values of US$490m (£386.5m).

Establish a program-wide organisational structure, processes, and procedures for effective management of all phases of construction, including early works construction, tunneling, stations, system testing, commissioning, close-out and turnover of facilities, are the contents of thsi contract. Additionally managing and administering construction contracts, construction costs and schedule, change orders, claims and disputes, as well as construction quality and safety, will be up to Bechtel.

According to Tom Maguire, chief megaprojects officer at VTA: “This contract award represents a significant step toward putting processes and systems in place to get a shovel in the ground. We are pleased to be working with Bechtel, who was integrally involved in the first phase of the BART extension, to help us deliver this project.”

During a groundbreaking ceremony, the construction phase of the BART Silicon Valley Phase II (BSVII) extension was officially launched in previous month.

In order to preparing for the arrival of the 16.5m diameter Herrenknecht TBM, construction is scheduled to commence later this year.

As the largest transport infrastructure undertaking in the history of Santa Clara County, the BSVII is going to integrate Santa Clara County with the greater Bay Area BARTA system and will take the service from Berryessa/North San José through downtown San José to the City of Santa Clara. It includes three stations with underground platforms (28th Street/Little Portugal, Downtown San José, and Diridon), one ground-level station (Santa Clara), a train maintenance and storage facility at Newhall Yard, and additional facilities.

The design-build contract for the tunnel and trackwork, was awarded to Kiewit Shea Traylor joint venture (KSTJV) in 2022.
