Turin Median Collector – TBM Passes FAT

Turin Median Collector TBM

In order to digging the Turin Median Collector, which’s nickname is the Hydropolitan and is due to be the new backbone of the Turin sewage network, the 4m-diameter slurry TBM has passed its Factory Acceptance Test.

Linking the southern part of the city with the north-west area of Turin, this new tunnel will be 14km-long and locates at a depth of 20m beneath Turin, while carrying wastewater to the SMAT Water Reclamation Centre in Castiglione Torinese.

The advantage of this new infrastructure will be helping to deal with problems associated with climate change, such as the significant increase in mixed wastewater discharges that the old collector is no longer able to handle. Additionally, it is going to enable special maintenance of the existing system.

During the construction works, remediation operations will be carried out because of the presence of unexploded military ordinance from the second world war.

In 2019, the design and build contract was granted to a Ghella / Itinera joint venture by the Metropolitan Water Company of Turin (SMAT).
