Metre – Gauge Line to be Modernized

Metre - Gauge Line Trains

ADIF, the Spanish state-owned railway infrastructure manager, has called tenders for a comprehensive promotion of the 1000 mm gauge Cercedilla – Los Cotos Mountain railway, which is served as Madrid suburban Line C9.

The steeply-graded 18·2 km route is electrified at 1·5 kV DC and climbs from 1158 m at Cercedilla to 1830 m at Los Cotos.

The upgrading project’s value is expected to be at €16·9m and is planned to be done during a seven-month blockade of the route in 2024.

The principal works will see the earthworks stabilized and the drainage enhanced, along with track renewals to promote an increase in line speed. In addition, the lining of the Navacerrada tunnel is to be treated to decrease water ingress. The three stations on the route are said to be modernized, while the former halts at Camorritos and Siete Picos will be opened again.

RENFE Operator has already granted a contract to CAF for providing six two-car EMUs for use on the line. These will substitute the four Class 442 trainsets constructed by MTM in 1976 and 1982.

The new units will be to a customized design, offering step-free access, a wheelchair-accessible toilet and space for bicycles. They will be supplied with batteries for ‘last mile’ movement if the overhead power supply is interrupted by heavy snowfall or fallen tree branches.
