The Largest Inner-City Tunnel in Greece is Coming

A Tunnel in Greece

Some of the essential extensions in Greece that have already been planned contain Kymi Avenue, which is anticipated to improve traffic considerably in Athens. The extension will comprise an enormous tunnel, which is said to be the biggest within a city in the Mediterranean country.

As News Auto reported, the scheduled extension will have a total length of 3.5 km, of which 2.5 km will be the tunnel, while the remaining part will be an extension of Attica Road.

Also, the new exit to the National Highway at the Kalyftaki junction will seriously relieve the traffic in the area. The project’s tender is anticipated to begin soon, and the project’s completion is said to be by 2027.

The extension project of Kymi Avenue will begin from the junction of the same name on Attica Odos and is going to end, after roughly 3.8 kilometers, at the Kalyftakis junction of the national road in Kato Kifissia.

The extension will make an alternative path and support relieving traffic on the busy Attiki Odos, particularly at the Metamorfosi junction.

The project will comprise a 1.25km underground tunnel and a 1.15km cut and cover tunnel. The last section of the route (1 km) will be flat road construction which will contain an uneven interchange at the current industrial park in the Lykovrysi area.

Another significantly important project will be the development of the urban tunnel of Ilioupoli, nearly 3 km long, with three lanes per traffic stream. This project will link the point at the Sakketa camp with Vouliagmenis Avenue, making a new highway.

It is desired to enhance the road network and transportation in the area, as the tunnel will cut the travel time – from Katehaki Avenue to Vouliagmenis Avenue – from 30 minutes to almost 10 minutes.

Moreover, private firms have submitted proposals for infrastructure projects in Attica, which are worth over 200 million Euros (excluding VAT).

Among the proposals are the continuation of the highway to the port of Rafina – bypassing L. Marathonos – and the widening of the current road from Markopoulos to the port of Lavrio.

The mentioned projects are some of the main ones that the residents of Athens are anxiously awaiting because various infrastructure improvement projects will be done simultaneously.
