The process of the tunneling works contract on stage one of the Elephant & Castle station capacity upgrade, has been commenced by Transport for London.
As a part of a wider redevelopment of the Elephant & Castle town center, the Elephant & Castle station capacity upgrade involves a new ticket hall integrated within the Elephant & Castle shopping center redevelopment, replacing the current Northern Line ticket hall and entrance, as well as safeguarding for Transport for London’s (TfL’s) proposed Bakerloo line extension.
In order to constructing the station box of the new TfL station, work launched in January 2022, while it comprises a reinforced concrete structure that is due to form the shell of the new station entrance and ticket hall. Following its completion, it will provide more than 1,700m2 of new concourse space for passengers.
Although the Elephant & Castle capacity upgrade is being delivered in two stages (with stage one covering early enabling and civils construction, and stage two involving the station fit-out), the latter has yet to secure funding.
The 20 April 2023 was date of publishing the contract notice for stage one of the scheme by TfL. This follows market engagement days that were held in May 2022 and March 2023, and a notice about the upcoming procurement earlier this year.
Including the design and construction of the works below TfL is seeking to appoint a single supplier to deliver stage one:
- The passenger tunnels connecting the new station box to the existing platforms, including associated enabling works
- Civil works associated with the completion of the new station box.
The deadline for companies who are interested in tendering for the 3.5-year contract and filling a selection questionnaire is noon on 5 June 2023. A maximum of four shortlisted bidders will then be invited to tender around 11 July.
