Gamuda Australia has been granted a significant transport project by the NSW Government, the Sydney Metro West – Western Tunnelling Package. In a consortium with Laing O’Rourke, Gamuda will deliver the AUD$ 2.16 billion project.
The Western Tunnelling Package scope comprises:
- A Tunnel Boring Machine launch site at Rosehill, tunnelling first toward Sydney Olympic Park and relaunched from Rosehill toward Westmead;
- Twin 9km tunnels from Sydney Olympic Park to Westmead;
- Excavation for a services facility and crossover structure at Rosehill to allow provision for fresh air ventilation and emergency egress;
- Earthworks, retaining structures, drainage and utilities corridor for the Clyde Maintenance Facility;
- Tunnel portal and dive excavation at Clyde Services and Maintenance Facility;
- Excavation and civil works for Parramatta and Westmead Stations; and
- A segment manufacturing facility at Eastern Creek constructing over 60,000 segments.
The Sydney Metro West project will help a growing city and provide world-class metro services to more communities, providing a fast and frequent link between Greater Parramatta and the Sydney CBD.
Executive Director at Gamuda Australia, Mr. Ewan Yee, claimed: “This is a very exciting transport project for Gamuda to deliver. Gamuda brings decades of international experience in metro rail construction and engineering innovation.”
He continued: “We look forward to working collaboratively with the NSW Government and Sydney Metro to ensure the benefits of this project are released through job creation, local and sustainable procurement as well as community partnerships for Western Sydney.”
Project Director for Gamuda Australia, Simon Hussey, pointed out: “There is a huge opportunity for us to leave a positive legacy through this project. This includes establishing a Tunnel Infrastructure Academy, to create sustainable jobs by training a more diverse and inclusive tunnelling and infrastructure workforce.”
“Both Gamuda and Laing O’Rourke are keen to start working with local businesses, stakeholders and the community to build our part of this vital piece of the metro network,” added Hussey.
Sydney Metro West Project will double rail capacity between Greater Parramatta and the Sydney CBD, transforming Sydney for future generations. This once-in-a-century infrastructure investment will cut the travel times to about 20 minutes between the two centers, connect new communities to rail services, and help employment growth and housing supply. Early works will start on the WTP within weeks, with tunnelling planned to begin in late 2023.
