With the help of Switzerland’s Federal Council the way for the underground freight tunnel network Cargo Sous Terrain (CST), has been paved.
The determined date for operating the law on underground goods transport by the Council is August 1, 2022, along with creating the legal basis for the privately financed freight transport project.
Stretching from Geneva to St Gallen, CST was launched in 2013 and will provide a tunnel network for automated, driverless electric freight vehicles. 2031 is the inauguration date of the first 70km section, that is linking the Härkingen-Niederbipp hub with Zurich, while Cargo Sous Terrain is due to create a 500km nationwide network by 2045.
The current undergoing project of CST is planning permission, initially focusing on the cantons of Aargau, Solothurn and Zurich, which is financed by private investors, including Afry, Pini, Implenia and Siemens.
