By eliminating the overhead electricity line and pylons from across the Dwyryd Estuary, 2022 is due to face a significant landmark with the start on-site of a project to transform a nationally significant Snowdonia landscape.
In order to present necessary information for the detailed design of the project for main construction that is going to commence in 2023, National Grid will start the environmental and archaeological survey works this spring and this process will continue through the summer, while the determined date for starting the establishment of construction sites at Garth, near National Grid’s existing land, as well as at Cilfor, the places for the two tunnel head houses at each end of the tunnel which will carry infrastructure beneath the estuary by the team is Autumn 2022.
This primary work will be launched from 2023 onwards with a program of shaft sinking, tunnel construction, head house construction, cable installation, and commissioning. Pylon removal is expected to take place following this, in 2029.
Collaborate of National Grid will be main contractor Hochtief who successfully tendered for the work in an international competition which concluded at the end of last year.
Following the completion, National Grid’s Visual Impact Provision (VIP) project, is due to face the removal of ten pylons and a roughly 3km stretch of available overhead line, which stretches from Minffordd, across the Dwyryd Estuary, and continues eastwards to just beyond Cilfor. The aim of this project is to boost the popular beauty spot for the many local people and visitors who regularly enjoy it.
