According to Transport for London lead sponsor Andrew Lunt’s releases about the scheme and advancement of the Silvertown Tunnel, a range of sustainable building solutions being benefited by the team working on the project, while he stated that a success story so far is the movement of materials by river.
Delivering or leaving more than 120,000t of waste and material on barges, which is equivalent to removing 6,750 loads from the road network, was done up to October 2021.
While the major construction process of this project commenced in 2020, due to the Covid-19 pandemic it was paused between March and June 2020.
The aimed connection location of the 1.4km long twin-bore road tunnel following the completion will be the A1020 Silvertown Way/Lower Lea crossing to the A102 Blackwall Tunnel approach.
In May 2018 the legal permission for the tunnel was confirmed and TfL then granted the Silvertown Tunnel design, build, financing, operations, and maintenance contract to the Riverlinx consortium in 2019. The subsets of this consortium are Ferrovial subsidiary Cintra, Bam PPP PGGM, Macquarie Capital, SK E+C, and Aberdeen Standard Investments.
Construction is being delivered by Bam Nuttall with sister company Wayss & Freytag Ingenieurbau, Ferrovial Agroman and SK E&C. These partners have appointed local sub-contractors and suppliers, with Keltbray brought in for piling.
