Construction process of the longest tunnel on the Kvesheti-Kobi road project in Kobi, was commenced on 10 September 2021 using a TBM.
The Prime Minister of Georgia Irakli Gharibashvili, Chairman of the Parliament Kakha Kuchava, and Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure Irakli Karseladze, were attended the opening event of this project.
While the Roads Department of the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia, have the responsibility of construction of the 23 km Kvesheti-Kobi road project, which’s the total cost is EUR337.07 million (GEL1.24 billion), the Asian Development Bank and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development is funding this project. The project is a key part of the North-South Corridor Expressway Modernization Project.
Building of 5 bridges and of 5 tunnels with a whole length of 11.5 km, are subsets of the 23 km Kvesheti-Kobi road project. The 9km long tunnel with 15m diameter, is the longest tunnel of this plan that is due to commence in the village Tskere and end in the village Kobi. The rest of the tunnels will be relatively small (1541 m, 194 m, 388 m, and 299 m).
The international supervisory company UBM, have the duty of monitoring the construction process of this project. The determined date for the completion of this new road is 2024, which will make the movement of all types of cars in the region at any time of the year easy.
