Latest tunneling experts in Turin

Italy’s Politecnico di Torino, best known for its Post Graduate Masters’ course in Tunnelling and Tunnel Boring Machines, is starting a new MSc course track to foreign students.

Professor Daniele Peila, who is responsible for the courses states “Our Tunnelling and TBM course is only open to students who already have an MSc or who have professional experience,” he also adds “We are getting lots of requests from students with Bachelors’ degrees, who can’t be admitted to that course but who want to get a grounding in geo-engineering and tunnelling.”

The MSc course in Geo-Engineering has only been taught in Italian so far, but it will now be taught in English by the Politecnico di Torino. This Geo-Engineering Master, researched over two years, includes site investigations, rock and soil engineering, the environmental and social effects of development projects, the sustainable use of energy and the risks of climate change. The MSc of Geo-Engineering. The Geo-Engineering MSc track could then lead onto the Masters in Tunnelling and TBMs, states Peila.

Peila furthermore asserts “Due to the importance given today to the enviromental impact of the industry, this track has been inserted and into the Masters’ Degree Programme of Environmental and Land Engineering, an existing programme at Politecnico di Torino,”

Both courses at the Politecnico de Torino will be delivered through a mix of face-to-face and remote teaching. Over the past 12 months, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Peila and his colleagues have been forced to teach remotely, and this has provided lots of valuable lessons on how to create an effective blended learning offer, says Peila.

Peila aims to invite students from around the world to the new Geo-Engineering Masters programme: “As well as students from emerging economies, I am also hoping to see people from the US and Canada, where going to university is very expensive,” he says. “If they come to Italy, it is less expensive to study and they will eat very well!”

In the next academic year, both courses will commence. Registration is now available, and all the details can be found on the website of Politecnico di Torino.
