The city’s Urban Railway Management Board is preparing the New Binh Duong City–Suoi Tien line, the Thu Dau Mot–central Ho Chi Minh City route and Phase 1 of Metro Line 6 between Tan Son Nhat International Airport and Phu Huu.
Official city information puts the three projects at a combined preliminary investment of around VND254.5tn (US$9.7bn).
Metro Line 6 is of particular interest to the tunnelling sector. The proposed Tan Son Nhat–Phu Huu section is approximately 23km long and would provide a new east-west public transport connection between the airport and eastern Ho Chi Minh City.
The city is also progressing the approximately 31.6km New Binh Duong City–Suoi Tien metro, currently estimated at VND55tn, and the longer Thu Dau Mot–Ho Chi Minh City route.
Ho Chi Minh City has instructed its project teams to complete route and station planning, feasibility studies and front-end engineering as part of an accelerated approval programme. The projects are intended to move into construction from the end of 2026, with completion targeted around 2030.
The schemes form part of a much larger expansion of the city’s urban railway network, which is planned to reach around 187km by 2030 and ultimately approximately 700km.
Detailed tunnelling quantities, station excavation methods and individual civil works packages have yet to be confirmed.
