Completing Stockholm Metro service tunnel blasting

Excavation of a service tunnel for the Stockholm Metro Expansion has been completed by Itinera.

As an indication of completing the tunnel linking Hagastaden and Arenastaden as part of the network’s expansion, the final 4m of blasting were achieved.

Itinera says:”The event was a milestone of major technical and logistical significance. The service tunnel is in fact a key element for the start of the subsequent construction phases, and the completion of this stage is the result of the high level of expertise of the teams involved in the underground works, operating in a complex urban environment and in compliance with stringent safety and sustainability requirements.”

As the largest investment in the Swedish capital’s public transport for 50 years, this expansion is due to add 30km of track and 18 stations to Stockholm’s metro network and will provide new Blue Line routes from Akalla-Barkarby and Kungsträdgården–Nacka and Söderort; a new Green Line connection from Odenplan-Arenastade; and construction of the entirely new Yellow Line from Fridhemsplan- Älvsjö.

The scheduled date for launching procurement for the Yellow Line tunneling contract is early this year.
