Bucharest Metro Line 6 – Progress made on South Section

While on the Magistrala 6 Metro Project (M6) in Bucharest, a Terratec EPB TBM is advancing through challenging sandy ground, steady progress is being made on this project

In April 2025, excavation on part of the South Section,1 Mai – Tokyo contract was commenced by Terratec S67 and this machine has reached a daily consistent advance rate of almost 14m since the installation of the belt conveyor system.

Due to existence of abrasive sandy soils and sections that pass beneath Herăstrău Lake, the alignment presents complex geological challenges and so it requires precise face pressure control and continuous monitoring. Despite the demanding conditions, the machine’s performance has remained stable, supported by Terratec’s on-site technical team.

In order to ensuring maximum safety and efficiency, TBM S67 which originally refurbished for this assignment, features several enhancements.

Field reports indicate moderate cutterhead wear at the centre, typical of sand-abrasive geology.

Developing Bucharest’s public transport network to one of the city’s busiest travel corridors, the new Metro Line 6 is going to establish a vital underground connection between Gara de Nord and Henri Coandă International Airport and the full line will comprise 14.2km of twin tunnels and 12 new stations, connecting residential, business, and airport districts across the northern axis of the capital.
