With the aim of improving and replacing the lighting in four tunnels across Milwaukee County, Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers has approved a $4.5m lighting systems upgrade project in various tunnels across Milwaukee County, and MP Systems has been announced as the prime contractor for this upgrade project by Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT).
The lighting systems in the northbound I-43 exit ramp tunnel to W. Kilbourn Avenue and the northbound I-43 entrance ramp tunnel from W. Kilbourn Avenue, will be upgraded under this project by MP Systems, whereas it is also going to replace lights in the northbound WIS 38 (S. Howell Avenue) tunnel under the MKE airport runway, and the southbound WIS 38 (S. Howell Avenue) tunnel under the MKE airport runway.
Multiple stages will be the contents of this project and Stage 1 involves work on the northbound I-43 exit ramp tunnel to W. Kilbourn Avenue and the detour is scheduled on the Exit 73A (Fond du Lac Avenue/WIS 145) to 6th Street.
Work on the northbound I-43 entrance ramp from W. Kilbourn Avenue is in the Stage 2 phase and its detour is planned on the 6th Street to Fond du Lac Avenue (WIS 145).
Lastly, stage 3 is due to include work on the WIS 38 tunnels under the MKE airport runway, while detour information for this stage will be provided closer to construction.
Over the construction process, WIS 38 (S. Howell Avenue) will remain open to traffic in both directions.
The determined date for starting the construction is this month and will be completed by mid-summer 2025, subject to weather.
