As part of Phase 4 of Armenia’s North-South Road Corridor, covering the segment from Agarak to Kajaran, the 360 m-long tunnel and concrete road infrastructure’s construction has started.
While advancing the project on schedule, the Eurasian Fund for Stabilization and Development (EFSD) updated on its progress during a recent mission to Armenia. Additionally, $150m specifically for this section of the corridor has been allocated by the EFSD.
Building of a 32km road, two tunnels (measuring 360m and 520m), as well as 17 bridges, including one with a span exceeding 720m, are the contents of Phase 4 of Armenia’s North-South Road Corridor.
In order to preparing the detailed design for the Kajaran-Agarak section of the North-South Road Corridor, an international bidding process was commissioned in 2018, whereas February 2019 was the date that the results of the bidding were finalised and the design work was completed in 2021.
Also with the aim of procuring construction works on a 21km road section from Agarak to Vardanidzor and the construction of an 11km road from Vardanidzor to the tunnel exit,a tender was announced.
The contract was granted to a joint venture between Abad Rahan Pars International Group and Tunnel Sadd Ariana, and the date of concluding the contract for completing the construction October 2023.
The total budget that the EFSD has invested into the North-South Road Corridor project in Armenia was $350m.
Traversig six of Armenia’s 11 regions, including Yerevan, this corridor serves over 1.5 million people each year.
Following completion, the advantages of this new route will be enabling an average vehicle speed of 80kmph due to being 14km shorter and reducing travel time between Kajaran and Agarak by approximately 40 minutes.
