In order to advancing the Kensico-Eastview Connection (KEC) tunnel project in the US, which is a 3.2km-long deep rock tunnel and is due to provide an additional means of transporting water between the Kensico Reservoir and the CDUV light disinfection facility, the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (NYC DEP) has awarded a contract worth around $1.1bn to Frontier-Kemper Constructors.
Including the development of a new 3.2km-long deep rock tunnel between the Kensico Reservoir and the Catskill/Delaware Ultraviolet (CDUV) light disinfection facility in Westchester County, this water tunnel project’s value is $1.9bn.
Providing an additional means of transporting water among the two locations, as well as bolstering operational resilience and redundancy for the state’s water supply system that serves over nine million people, will be the advantages of this project.
The location of NYC DEP’s proposed tunnel will be almost 500ft beneath the ground.
The scheduled date for commencing the Kensico-Eastview Connection tunnel project work by Frontier-Kemper Constructors, which is a subsidiary of speciality construction company Tutor Perini, is the coming months, whereas the is anticipated date for its completion is the end of this decade.
The contract value for the water tunnel project has been added to Tutor Perini’s backlog for Q3 2024.
The Kensico Campus and the KEC Eastview Site, are the subsets of the Kensico-Eastview Connection project that is located within Mount Pleasant.
As part of the project, two new shafts will be constructed to facilitate the tunnel’s construction and water conveyance.
The location of downtake shaft, KEC Shaft 1C, is slated to be at the Kensico Campus near the KEC Screen Chamber, while situation of the uptake shaft, KEC Shaft 2C, is going to be at the Eastview Site’s Eastview Connection Chamber (ECC).
Stretching from the KEC Eastview Site to eastward towards the Kensico Campus, the KEC Tunnel will be constructed by a tunnel boring machine (TBM) and will link with KEC Shaft 1C.
With an inner diameter of around 27ft, the completed tunnel will be lined with at least 1.5ft of cast-in-place concrete along its entire length.
Following its completion, the Kensico-Eastview Connection project will increase the flow of water to the CDUV facility and boost the DEP’s ability to maintain normal operating levels at Hillview Reservoir during single-basin operations.
August 2023, was the date that the final environmental impact statement (FEIS) for the project was issued, while the time of starting construction on the Kensico-Eastview Connection tunnel project by NYC DEP was July this year.
