Delhi Metro’s Phase 4_ Achieving another breakthrough

Another breakthrough has been achieved on the tunnel between Chhatarpur and Chhatarpur Mandir Station on the Tughlakabad-Aerocity corridor of the Phase 4 Golden Line, by Delhi Metro Rail Corporation.

Following completion of an 860m-long drive, the TBM broke through at Chhatarpur Mandir Station last week.

As part of the Aerocity–Tughlakabad corridor, two parallel tunnels for up and down movement have been constructed on this stretch, whereas the date of breakthrough on the parallel tunnel was August 21.

Installing almost 613 rings in the tunnel and forming an inner diameter of 5.8m, this tunnel was built at an average depth of approximately 12m by the 97m-long EPB TBM.

The location of manufacturing the tunnel rings was a fully automated casting yard at Mundka.

Several challenges, such as shifting a 66KV electrical HT line as well as passing beneath the existing Yellow Line viaduct without disrupting metro operations on the line, there were in the path of tunneling work.

As part of the Phase 4 work approved so far, 40.109km of underground lines are being constructed. The Aerocity-Tughlakabad corridor has underground sections totalling 19.343km.

Considering thatTBMs Bhoomi and Srishti emerged at the same time at Pulbangash Metro Station, Afcons made the first simultaneous twin tunnel breakthrough on Phase 4 in previous month.

The digging process of all phases of the Delhi Metro have been done by TBM, and in Phase 3, which comprises around 50km of tunnels, about 30 TBMs were deployed.
