Hydro Tasmania Project – Commencing tunnel construction

Linking the new intake at Lake King William to a future new conveyance that will feed water into Tarraleah Power Station, the 1km tunnel for the Tarraleah hydropower scheme in Tasmania, Australia was started to construct using drill and blast method.

Managing the works is up to Tasmanian company Hazell Bros Group alongside Tunnelling Solutions and estimated time duration for completing almost 260 blasts is 15 months, whereas around 100,000 tonnes of material will be removed along length of the tunnel.

Considering that the downstream tunnel portal recently was completed by Hazell Bros, it enables the next phase of upgrades to commence.

In order to maximizing hydro capacity, build long-duration storage and deliver clean, reliable energy, Tarraleah is a crucial part of Hydro Tasmania’s Battery of the Nation initiative. The redevelopment of the 85-year-old Tarraleah hydro scheme aims to increase peak capacity from 90MW to 190MW and deliver 30% more energy from the same amount of water.
