Tideway Super Sewer Tunnel – Landmark in Secondary Lining

Tideway Super Sewer Tunnel

Considering that the secondary lining of the Greenwich Connection Tunnel reaches Earl Pumping Station, another construction milestone on London’s Tideway super sewer project has been achieved.

In order to constructing the finished lining, the shuttering machines was used and they have completed the 4.5km long tunnel’s 2.8km (65%) and have been cleaned inside the shaft at the pumping station near Surrey Quays ready for the final stage of the work.

The location of relaunching the machines is Chambers Wharf in Bermondsey where the connection tunnel meets the main 7.2m diameter, 25km-long Tideway Tunnel, which stretches from Acton in the west to Abbey Mills pumping station in Newham in east London, where it is due to link to the Lee Tunnel.

Just over a year ago, tunnel boring machine Annie has completed primary lining of the Greenwich Connection Tunnel.

The advantages of the Greenwich connection tunnel will be helping prevent sewage overflow into the Deptford Creek as well as River Ravensbourne, directing the flows into the new super sewer.

The estimated budget for the overall project was increased to £4.5bn – some £1bn more than initial predictions by Tideway in the previous month.

While the date of commencing the work on the construction project was in 2016, currently it is about 90% complete, with the assets on course to be handed over to Thames Water in the second half of 2025.

In November 2022 Secondary lining for the 7km western section of the main tunnel was completed. Elsewhere on the project the new tunnel is being connected to the existing sewer overflow network, which will significantly reduce sewage overflows into the River Thames.
