FOT (The Federal Office of Transport) has allocated the construction approval for the new tram-train line that will link Lugano to Ponte Tresa and Manno. This project is the first stage of a modern network which intends to enhance the public transport proposed between Lugano and the surrounding areas.
The new Lugano tram-train will operate from the centre of Lugano to Bioggio, after which the line will divide into two branches: one going northeast up to Manno and the other going southwest to the current section towards Ponte Tresa.

The confirmed project contains various elements, such as the underground station in correspondence with the Lugano FFS station, a 2.2 km tunnel, an extra stop in the Agno Municipality, and a new maintenance centre for the railway company FLP and interchange car parks.
The project’s predicted cost is EUR 518.57 million, half of which is funded by the federal government as part of the 2035 railway expansion phase and the new traffic network.
