RTF, Italy’s national rail operator, has selected a team of contractors comprising Impresa Pizzarotti and Saipem to build a high-speed rail link and station in Florence.

The project is worth €1.1bn and contains boring a 7km tunnel and constructing Firenze Belfiore station, designed by Foster + Partners and Arup (consulting engineer).

The new line seeks to separate high-speed inter-city trains from the Tuscan regional network.

As Saipem claimed, the improvement of Florence’s rail system will help the development of sustainable mobility. In addition, it will advance one of the EU’s trans-European networks, along with the Milan-Bologna and Milan-Verona high-speed links.

In a press statement, Pizzarotti pointed out that its AI monitoring system would be used for controlling the TBM.

The chief executive of Pizzarotti, Carlo Luzzatto, stated: “The Florence rail link will benefit from the powerful monitoring platform produced by the partnership between Pizzarotti and [Italian tech company] Seco. AI, machine learning, real time and digital modelling are the keywords of the smart infrastructure.”
