Contract Notice Issued for Devon District Heating Interconnector

East Devon District Council has allocated a contract notice for the pipeline design and construction of the Cranbrook-Monkerton District Heating Interconnector.

Lot 1 is worth about £25m and contains tunnelling – presently proposed by pipe jacking – under a dual carriageway and in closeness to an operational airport.

It also comprises the construction and fit-out of a heat transfer station on an energy-from-waste site, the building of a 7.5 km heat transmission main, and the supply and installation of two heat transfer interfaces.

In addition, the council has granted a contract notice for Lot 2 – the operation and maintenance.

The project is said to link the current and yet-to-be-developed parts of the Cranbrook/Skypark and Monkerton heat networks to a low-carbon heat source at Hill Barton Business Park.

Once completed, the project will supply low-carbon heat to 12,000 homes from an energy-from-waste plant which is under development.

The Cranbrook/Skypark and Monkerton networks are planned to provide 3,500 homes and 1.4 million ft2 of commercial space and 4,600 homes and 800,000 ft2 of commercial space, respectively. The connection project will allow the bulk supply of heat to both networks.

Moreover, the interconnector will support the planned expansion of the Cranbrook new town to circa 8,000 homes by facilitating the delivery of a Future Homes Standard and Future Buildings Standard-compliant energy solution.

The deadline for receiving tenders or proposals to participate is announced to be on May 5.
