Ferrovial has deployed one of the world’s first 5G private wireless networks at its Silvertown Tunnel construction site.
For the Riverlinx Construction joint venture which includes Ferrovial Construction, BAM Nuttall, and SK Ecoplant, it will develop the wireless connectivity within the tunnel, and improve access management, site communications, and perimeter control.
Also, the super quick network is going to be used for better environmental monitoring and real-time visualization of construction progress.
Simultaneously, Ferrovial will make sure that the integration of the 5G network boosts the working conditions of the team by supplying telematic assistance.
Now, the 5G network is only available in the southern part of the Silvertown site, placed on the Greenwich Peninsula.
It is anticipated to have it developed to the northern area, placed on the opposite bank of the River Thames, in the next few months.
“This milestone reinforces Ferrovial’s position to lead the digital transformation of the construction sector,” stated Information and Innovation Officer at Ferrovial, Dimitris Bountolos.
He also added: “5G networks enable great advances in the way we design, build and manage projects, therefore making them safer, more efficient, and more sustainable.”
The technological milestone comes at a major time, paving the way to design future building projects mixing the augmented reality, Internet of Things, artificial intelligence, and robotics.
In addition, it is going to assist to make new business models and opportunities, and coordinate the work of infrastructure firms associated with 5G networks.
Nokia country CEO for UK&I, Phil Siveter, mentioned: “By deploying an industrial-grade private 5G wireless network, Ferrovial is building the foundation for its digital transformation journey to Industry 4.0.”
“Our Nokia 5G Standalone DAC solution provides the scalability, reliability, and performance that’s needed on large construction sites to improve communication and collaboration amongst the field team and management, enabling them to be more productive and efficient while working in a safer environment,” continued Phil.
