Northern Tunnel Portal construction
Boring of a tunnel boring machine extraction box is under process. The extraction box is going to be used to remove Merle and Else TBMs when they arrive in late 2021. An essential milestone for the project team has been done in late August with piling for the tunnel portal structure being completed. The roof installation will begin this month.
Also, the sewer relocation continues under the rail corridor and in Victoria Park.
Upcoming rail corridor work
Before October 5, the work will occur next to and within the rail corridor to install a gantry crane, which is going to be used to remove the two machines when they complete tunneling.
Rail corridor pedestrian bridge closure
Cross River Rail’s twin tunnels is going to be placed under the pedestrian bridge that spans the Northern Tunnel Portal site.
From mid-September to late 2021, intermittent temporary closures of the pedestrian bridge are needed while bridge strengthening work and during tunneling works – boring and building a ramp – taking place below the pedestrian bridge. A pedestrian diversion will be in place during the closures.
