On April 2021, the JV Lane Construction /Webuild Group completed boring of the USD580 million (EUR 477.53 million) NEBT (Northeast Boundary Tunnel) project in Washington, D.C.
The EPB tunnel boring machine which is named Chris, has completed CSO (the combined sewer outflow) tunnel which is being built to improve the water quality of the Anacostia River in Washington, D.C. The NEBT tunnel which has 7 m (23-feet) inside diameter, and is 8.2 km (27,700 feet) long and lined with 4,442 rings, expands from the Robert F. Kennedy Stadium to R Street, NW close to downtown D.C.
In last month, hole-through milestone at the R Street shaft came almost one year after Chris arrived the W Street shaft, the first and only in-line shaft that the machine crossed during its 26,700-foot-long drive under Washington, D.C.
The project is known as the largest component of the Clean Rivers Project, a greater initiative being led by DC Water, which will supply a complete system where sanitary and storm water from local jurisdictions is treated before being discharged into the Anacostia and Potomac Rivers.
When the project is fully completed, the NEBT is going to rise the capacity of the current sewer system to assist manage flooding due to weather events, a problem that the District has been experiencing for decades.
