Pawtucket Tunnel Project

The Narragansett Bay Commission has issued to CB3A joint-venture notice to proceed with the work on the Pawtucket Tunnel Project, for rectifying water quality in Narragansett Bay. The CBNA, a US-based subsidiary of Bouygues Travaux Publics, and local civil works contractor Barletta Heavy Divisio, are the subsets of this joint venture.

The €394 million (Bouygues Travaux Publics’ share is €256 million) budget has been awarded for this contract. Located in the Rhode Island Delta, approximately 75 km south of Boston, the Pawtucket Tunnel Project is the first part of phase 3 of the Bay’s water management modernization program (Phase IIIA). The scheme and construction of the tunnel and its subsidiary structures, are parts of CB3A responsibilities.

A tunnel boring machine, which specifically is designed for varied geology of the path, will dig the main tunnel with 3.5 km length along the Seekonk River. This TBM includes a 9m inner diameter, which will have a noticeable impress in collecting and stocking a proportion of the region’s rainwater, waste water and industrial water pending treatment by the water treatment plant.

Excavation of the three major shafts is also a part of this project and one of these shafts will act as a pumping station and provide the available treatment plant. Moreover, for collecting the water as well as their linking tunnels to the main tunnel, 4 drop shafts will be constructed.

Due to the location of this project, which is in the civic local area, and in order to preserve the environment and reduction of impact of the work on local inhabitants, the project will be subject to accurate designed.

The concluded contract with CB3A will cover a 48-month period and the engineering company Aecom is going to support the CB3A to fulfill the design. This project will also progress the local employment and the integration of local businesses when organizing the work.
