
Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced an urban road upgrade that will include construction of three tunnels.
Including four bridges and three tunnels over a combined length of 4.1km, this project is due to upgrade Umm Suqeim Street from its intersection with Jumeirah Street to Al Khail Road.
With the aim of improving traffic flow on surface-level roads, this tunnels will be built at three of the six key intersections along Umm Suqeim Street.
Widening the road to four lanes between First Al Khail Street and Al Asayel Street, are the additional improvements that is going to require the construction and widening of two flyovers.
As part of a major upgrade to Umm Suqeim Street from its intersection with Al Khail Road to Emirates Road, the works ultimately provides 20km of uninterrupted traffic flow from Jumeirah to Al Qudra Road, while the ongoing project is due to increase Umm Suqeim Street’s capacity to 16,000 vehicles per hour in both directions.
Running from its intersection with Al Khail Road to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, a 4.6km section of Umm Suqeim Street is currently advancing by RTA. This phase includes the redevelopment of the intersection at Al Barsha South, with the construction of an 800m tunnel comprising four lanes in each direction, along with a surface-level intersection. Works are more than 70% complete and the section is scheduled to open in the third quarter of this year.
