Indore Metro underground section contract – Winner is HCC-Tata Projects JV

In order to advancing the Indore Metro underground section in Madhya Pradesh, India, a construction contract has been awarded by a joint venture of Hindustan Construction and Tata Projects.

As the first and only underground section of Indore Metro Phase 1’s Yellow Line, Package IN-05R ‘s lowest bidder was HCC – TPL Indore Metro JV.

Connecting a ramp east of Indore Railway Station to a ramp west of Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar Airport, the 8.626km underground corridor will feature twin tunnels and seven underground stations.

Comprising of Indore Railway Station, Rajwada, Chota Ganpati, Bada Ganpati, Ramchandra Nagar, BSF/Kalani Nagar, as well as the airport, this route is said to be the sole underground section in the 33.53km Indore Metro Phase 1 project.

While linking to to Package IN-04, currently under construction by RVNL – URCC JV will be done on the east side, on the west side, it is due to connect to Package IN-03, under construction by URCC through a subcontract by RVNL.

The determined completion deadline for this project was a four-year duration in February 2024 and MPMRCL invited bids for underground stations and tunnels with an estimated cost of around INR25bn ($287m).

Following that in November 2024 the technical bids were opened, six firms submitted proposals, and Afcons-Sam India JV and ITD Cementation India were disqualified for non-compliance with tender conditions.

After evaluating the bidders, such as d Larsen & Toubro, J Kumar Infraprojects, and Gulermak Agir Sanayi Insaat Ve Taahhut, HCC – TPL Indore Metro JV won the contract with a bid of INR22bn ($253m), 14.08% below the estimated cost.

The responsibility of funding this project will be up to the Asian Development Bank (ADB) by a $200m loan.

The scheduled date for commencing groundwork is Q2 2025, with construction starting in Q3 2025 and tunneling work around Q3 2026.

In order to building 16 tunnels for the underground section, HCC is going to use at least four tunnel boring machines (TBMs).

Enhancing the city’s modern public transportation system, the completion of the project will support Indore’s metro expansion.
