LTA Awards Further Contract for CRL2

Cross Island Line Phase 2 (CRL2)

The civil contract for the design and construction of Maju station and tunnels under Cross Island Line Phase 2 (CRL2), which’s value is almost S$480m (£282.4m), has been granted to KTC Civil Engineering & Construction Pte Ltd by Singapore’s Land Transport Authority (LTA).

While the construction process of Tampines interchange station on the Downtown Line and Orchard Boulevard station on the Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL) already was up to KTC Civil Engineering & Construction, a Singapore company, currently it is in the finishing stage of the construction of TEL Sungei Bedok station.

Being located along Clementi Road, CRL Maju station is an underground station and has been situated near existing residential developments and educational institutions. Considering existence of the undulating terrain and mixed ground conditions the works will be challenging and so the earth retaining and stabilising structures is due to be built before excavation and construction works for station structures commence.

The scheduled date for commencing the construction works of the station is second quarter of this year and passenger service for CRL Phase 2 is targeted to commence in 2032.

As Singapore’s eighth MRT line, the CRL is slated to serve existing and future extensions in the eastern, north-eastern and western corridors, connecting major hubs such as Jurong Lake District, Punggol Digital District and Changi region. The CRL will have almost half of its stations as interchanges with other rail lines.

Being constructed in three phases, CRL is fully underground and its first Phase is 29km long and comprises 12 stations from Aviation Park to Bright Hill and was announced in 2019, whereas its construction is undergoing and is estimated to be completed by 2030.

September 2022, was teh announcement date of CRL Phase 2, which is around 15km long and includes six underground stations – Turf City, King Albert Park, Maju, Clementi, West Coast and Jurong Lake District.

In December last year, Gamuda Bhd Singapore branch was awarded the civil contract for the design and construction of West Coast station and tunnels.

Meanwhile, the engineering studies for the CRL Phase 3 are ongoing.
