As reported, the excavation of the Kok-Art tunnel, the most extensive tunnel in Kyrgyzstan, has now been completed.
As part of the North-South Alternative Road project, Kyrgyzstan’s Ministry of Transport is constructing a tunnel which is located in the Kazarman-Jalal-Abad section of the road along the border between the Toguz-Toro and Suzak districts.
The project has the intention to guarantee smooth traffic flow for two extensive vehicles traveling in opposite directions without causing any congestion.
As estimated, the total project is predicted to cost US$136 million and is planned to be operational by the end of 2024.
In 2014, the ministry started building the North-South alternative road, which spans 433 kilometers and costs US$850 million in total.
As reported, the road is constructed in challenging mountainous terrain to link the northern and southern parts of Kyrgyzstan, being separated by the Fergana Range.
