CCCC (China Communications Construction Company) has declared that one of its domestically-made slurry TBMs – the greatest of its type to have been developed in China – has begun excavating the East Sixth Ring Road Reconstruction Project in Beijing.
The tunnel boring machine ‘Yunhe’, has a diameter of 16.07m, weighing 4,500t, and a total length of 145m, and it is going to excavate a 7.4km tunnel out of the 16km-long road project. The TBM is stated to be able to bore constantly for 4.8km without needing cutter changes as it passes under rivers and urban areas in difficult and diverse geologies.
It is argued that the tunnel will have three decks: the upper reserved for smoke evacuation, the middle for road traffic, and the lower to serve for escape and rescue.
The project is anticipated to be completed by the end of 2023.
CCCC declared that this project (Beijing East Sixth Ring Road Reconstruction) is a core component of Beijing’s masterplan, serving to reduce traffic pressure on the East Sixth Ring Road and boost the development of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region.
