The scheduled date for openning of the Polish road tunnel was 9 December 2025.
Being launched in July to construct the 2.25km-long twin-tube tunnel, TBM Karpatka passed through at the northern portal.
Building the tunnel as well as over 10km of the expressway from the Rzeszów Południe interchange to Babica for the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways is up to the Acciona and Mostostal Warszawa consortium.
Considering the tunnel’s over than 15m diameter and the area’s complex geology, the construction is among the most challenging engineering projects in Europe as the consortium says.
Linking Lithuania with Greece through Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, and Bulgaria, this twin-tube tunnel is part of the S19 highway and is included in the international Via Carpatia corridor. In Poland, the route will span approximately 700km, crossing five provinces.
