Giuseppe Conte, Italian Prime Minister, said in a press release that he is considering building an underwater tunnel worth €5 billion, connecting the mainland and Sicily, to enhance the transportation infrastructure and develop access to the island.
Although the proposed project was formerly rejected (in 2006 and 2016) due to lack of financial resources and geological location of the island, Italy hopes to get a nod from the European Commission to invest a €210 billion Recovery Fund, received from the EU to compensate for the economic crisis induced by COVID 19.
The estimated tunneling timeline is five years. The project aims to link Sicily to Italy’s rail transport system through a road and rail tunnel crossing the Strait of Messina.
