Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport – Tunnels Refurbishment Set to Start

Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport

At the current month works to refurbish tunnels at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) is going to start.

The determined date for completion of the construction process is 2027 and it continues year-round.

Improvements to the roadway surface, lighting, ventilation, fire protection, communications and monitoring systems, electrical systems and overhead signage, as well as structural repairs and stormwater collection improvements in the tunnels, in addition to other airport infrastructure, are contents of the first project of the Dingell Drive Tunnels and Roadway Rehabilitation Program.

Including rehabilitation of exterior drainage and waterproofing systems of the south and north tunnels, the second project is in the planning stages. Wayne County Airport Authority (WCAA) plans for the second project to start next year.

In September 2023, the contract with US$85.5m (£67.2m) value was granted for the first project of Toebe Construction by WCAA. The US$1.2tn Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL), which Congress passed in 2021, is slated to fund most of the project.

Providing access to the McNamara Terminal, the three tunnels support the airfield runway and taxiway pavement and have been constructed in the late 1990s and early 2000s. While the southern tunnel supports Runway 9R/27L and Taxiways Juliet and Tango, supporting Taxiway Fox is up to the middle tunnel and the northern tunnel supports Runway 9L/27R and Taxiway Victor.
