A Request for Qualifications (RFQ) for the advance tunnel contract package for Toronto’s Yonge North Subway Extension, was issued by Infrastructure Ontario and Metrolinx.

Involving design, build and finance, this package covers around 6.3km of tunneling works; the design and construction of launch and extraction shafts, tunnels, as well as headwalls for stations and support of excavation for emergency exit buildings; the design, procurement and supply of TBMs and tunnel liner segments; reinforcing and improving soil and works necessary to facilitate tunneling under and next to the CN Railway tracks and the York Durham Sewage System; and construction of CN right-of-way separation barriers for safe corridor access and construction.

The initial step in order to delivering the new subway as quickly as possible will be commencing the tunneling process followed by a separate contract to construct the stations, rail and systems.

In order to transforming public transport, the funded budget by Ontario is C$70.5bn (US$51.6bn) over the next decade, while it includes the largest subway expansion in Canadian history with the Ontario Line, the Scarborough Subway Extension, the Eglinton Crosstown West Extension, and the Yonge North Subway Extension.
