Yesterday, the New South Wales Government approved the decision to withdraw the Beaches Link project, which contained roughly 6.5km long twin tunnels.
Transport for NSW revealed an updated statement, declaring that it will now write to the Department of Planning and Environment to cancel its State Significant Infrastructure Application for this project.
“Transport will continue to carry out a road network review to assess what, if any, network improvements may be required in northern Sydney and other impacted areas to ensure a safe, efficient and reliable road network for motorists,” the statement said.
The Western Harbor Tunnel and Warringah Freeway Upgrade was designed as a significant transport infrastructure project scheduled to make it easier, faster, and safer to get around Sydney.
By constructing a western bypass of the Sydney CBD, the Western Harbor Tunnel was intended to take pressure off the Sydney Harbor Bridge, Sydney Harbor Tunnel, Anzac Bridge, and Western Distributor corridors to enhance transport capacity in and around Sydney Harbor.
