E6 Highway Development Project

Finance Minister Trygve Slagsvold Vedum and Fisheries Minister Bjørnar Skjæran unveiled that in a tremendous development, the Norwegian government has committed a substantial investment of NOK 4 billion for the ambitious E6 highway development project in Sørfold, Nordland.

This groundbreaking infrastructure ambition, envisioned to start in 2024, celebrates a pivotal moment in linking Norway’s northern and southern regions, providing safer and better accessible travel.

Project Overview: The E6 Megården–Mørsvikbotn project is designated to contain the construction of 43.5 kilometers of new roadway, with nearly 24 kilometers of that including brand-new tunnels, complemented by bridges and enhanced current roads. The standout characteristic is an 812-meter-long suspension bridge over Leirfjorden, contributing to a total decrease in travel distance by 14.5 kilometers.

Fundamental Project Information:

  • Total Length: 45 kilometers, comprising 20 kilometers of open-air road at 8.5 meters width.
  • 10 Tunnels with a combined length of 23 kilometers.
  • 20 Tunnel Portals spanning 400 meters.
  • Suspension Bridge measuring 812 meters.
  • Pile-Foundation Bridge with multiple spans, advancing 555 meters.
  • 5 Pile-Foundation Bridges, ranging in length from 40 to 178 meters.
  • Several minor concrete structures.
  • Evaluated Total Cost: EUR 1.2+ billion.

Contract Phases:

  • Contract P1 (Megården-Sommerset): Includes a road length of 23 kilometers, comprising 9.4 kilometers of open-air road, four rock tunnels with a total of 12.7 kilometers length, two bridges (178 meters and 555 meters in length), eight concrete tunnel portals, and different minor structures. The call for tender is set to be in the first quarter of 2024.
  • Contract P2 (Sommerset-Tverrdalen): Contains a road length of 5.1 kilometers, featuring 0.1 kilometers of open-air road, two rock tunnels totaling 4.2 kilometers in length, a suspension bridge spanning 0.8 kilometers, concrete tunnel portals, and further minor structures.
  • Contract P3 (Tverrdalen-Mørsvikbotn): This phase incorporates a road length of 17 kilometers, containing 10.5 kilometers of open-air road, four rock tunnels estimating a combined 6.1 kilometers, two bridges (128 meters and 138 meters long, respectively), eight concrete tunnel portals, and various minor structures.
