RFI and Webuild are Going to Advance the Terzo Valico-Genoa Junction

Terzo Valico-Genoa Junction

In order to ensuring the seamless progression of the Terzo Valico dei Giovi-Genoa Junction One Project, aligning closely with the PNRR timelines, RFI and Webuild concluded a Contract Rider with EUR 700 million value on November 21, 2023. Considering the railway safety and technical specifications, the rider emphasizes the project’s adherence to newly introduced interventions, whereas it particularly addresses extraordinary geological challenges encountered during excavation phases.

Cheking the Val Lemme and Radimero construction sites, Italian Infrastructure Minister Edoardo Rixi approved the adherence to established timelines and Rixi affirmed the government’s commitment to overcoming challenges in constructing Europe’s largest railroad project. The funding allocated from PNRR sources acts as a critical catalyst, urging the involved companies to expedite project closure.

As a key component of an investment plan intended at elevating Genoa into a prominent European logistics hub, this project’s funding is totally up to RFI, part of the Ferrovie dello Stato Group. Notably, this plan includes the ongoing construction of the new Genoa breakwater led by the Webuild consortium.

The contents of this ambitious infrastructure project are 70% tunnels, spanning a total underground length exceeding 90 kilometers, while more than 50 construction sites initiated since the project’s inception, several have concluded while new sites continue to open along the route. Due to ceaselessly 24/7 operation schedule, these sites have facilitated concurrent work on over 30 excavation fronts and 86% of the total tunnel work has been accomplished now.

With aim of traversing Genoa and Alessandria provinces to link with Milan, the Terzo Valico dei Giovi-Genoa Junction One Project promises to enable trains to reach speeds of up to 250 km/h. As this project holds strategic significance for Europe as a whole, it is poised to revolutionize railway transportation in Northern Italy.
